Jim has been teaching music for 35+ years. He has taught at all levels, from kindergarten to college. Jim received his Bachelor of Music degree from Shorter University, Rome, Georgia, where he sang with the Shorter Chorale, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Madrigal Singers. Jim, also, had the opportunity to sing with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw. After receiving his Master of Music from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, Jim returned to his hometown to teach choir at his alma mater. Jim was active in community and civic ensembles including the Macon Civic Chorale. In 1996, Jim had the opportunity to travel to Japan to join with a mass choir in a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
Jim’s involvement in musical theatre began when was selected to be the musical director for a community theatre production of Li’ll Abner which his entire family was involved. Jim became active in local musical theatre productions as musical director and pit musician for Into the Woods, Chicago, 1940’s Radio Hour, Grease!, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, South Pacific, and many, many others. Jim Moved to Conroe in 2007 and became active in local music groups including: Conroe Symphony, Symphony North of Houston, The Woodlands Concert Band, The Woodlands Symphony, as well as local community and school musical productions. Jim has performed as a member of the chorus in five productions of Opera in The Heights. Jim began teaching at The Woodlands Academy of Music in 2015 and purchased the Academy in 2021. Jim appreciates All genre of music, but particularly enjoys classical, jazz, musical theatre, and the Great American Song Book. Jim is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, National Federation of Music Clubs, and the Tejas Music Club.
